An impact crusher consists of a rotor, blow bars, impact plates and a frame. The motor drives the rotor at high speed through V-belts. Feed entering the chamber is struck by the blow bars, accelerated and thrown against the first impact plate; it rebounds into the blow-bar path, is struck again and thrown against the second plate. Repeated impact and attrition between bars and plates break the material progressively until it discharges from the outlet.
Because impact crushing follows natural fractures and planes of weakness, energy utilisation is high and the reduction ratio is large. The gap between the blow bars and the impact plates sets the product size: a tighter gap gives a finer product but lower throughput.
Not recommended. Granite typically runs 150–250 MPa and is highly abrasive, so blow bars wear very quickly and the running cost becomes much higher than a cone crusher. For hard rock such as granite and basalt, use a cone for secondary and tertiary duty; impact crushers suit medium-soft, brittle material such as limestone, dolomite and sandstone.
It depends on abrasiveness and tonnage. On limestone a set of high-chromium bars typically lasts 600–1,200 hours; on abrasive sandstone it may be only 300–600 hours. Because bars can be turned through four positions, the practical change point is when they can no longer be rotated.
Three options: reduce rotor tip speed to limit over-crushing; open the impact-plate gap to lower the fines fraction; or split the high-fines fraction out of the closed circuit and use it separately as manufactured-sand feed rather than circulating it inside the aggregate line.
