The working mechanism consists of a fixed jaw and a movable jaw. The motor drives the eccentric shaft through V-belts; the pitman and toggle plates make the movable jaw swing in a compound pendulum motion. When the movable jaw approaches the fixed jaw, material in the chamber is squeezed, split and bent until it breaks; as the jaw retreats, the broken material discharges through the outlet under its own weight.
Crushing is a continuous, alternating process. Shaft speed, jaw throw and the closed-side setting together determine throughput and product-size distribution. Where flakiness must be controlled, the setting is tuned to the material's compressive strength and a cone or impact crusher is used downstream for shaping.
A jaw crusher is a compression-type primary crusher suited to rock and ore with compressive strength up to about 320 MPa — granite, basalt, river stone, limestone, iron ore, gold ore, construction waste and more. Very sticky or high-moisture material needs de-sliming first or a different machine type.
PE models typically use shim or wedge adjustment and PEX fine crushers use shims; optional hydraulic adjustment is available on some models, where a hydraulic cylinder moves the adjusting seat so the setting can be changed without stopping to remove shims — useful when product size changes often.
Wear life depends on abrasiveness and feed size. On abrasive rock such as granite, high-manganese jaw plates typically last 3–6 months; on medium-soft limestone, over a year. Using Mn13Cr2 and feeding evenly extends the interval noticeably.
For hard rock (granite, basalt) use jaw + cone so the work is done by inter-particle compression with less wear. For medium-soft rock (limestone, dolomite) use jaw + impact for better particle shape and lower investment. The jaw crusher is always the first stage, reducing run-of-mine rock to what the secondary crusher can accept.
